Saturator
A saturator is a machine that carbonates still water or other beverages by dissolving CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the liquid. These systems receive uncarbonated water from purification plants and add precise levels of carbonation before the filling process.
Saturators can process both water and wine, with machine specifications tailored to the specific product being carbonated.
Saturator Construction
Configuration
Saturators typically feature a double-column design mounted on a common base structure. The configuration includes:
- Storage tanks — sized according to required flow rate
- Valve systems — control CO2 injection and product flow
- Tank-to-valve connections — complete piping assembly
- CO2 supply connection — links to external carbon dioxide system (typically located outside the building)
Materials
Saturator tanks are constructed from food-grade stainless steel:
| Material |
Characteristics |
Application |
| AISI 316 |
Higher corrosion resistance |
Wine, acidic beverages, demanding applications |
| AISI 304 |
Standard corrosion resistance |
Water and non-aggressive food liquids |
Capacity and Flow Rate
Saturator production capacity is expressed in liters per hour (L/h), defining the hourly output of carbonated product. Flow rate varies according to tank size used in construction.
Capacity selection depends on:
- Filling line speed — must match downstream equipment
- Product type — water, wine, or other beverages
- Carbonation level — different products require varying CO2 concentrations
Control System
Saturator operation is managed by a dedicated PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) with integrated electrical panel:
- Carbonation level control — adjustable CO2 dosing based on product requirements
- Process monitoring — continuous supervision of carbonation parameters
- Product-specific programs — different settings for various beverage types
Installation Characteristics
Saturators offer practical advantages for bottling plant layout:
- Compact footprint — minimal floor space requirement
- Easy handling — manageable dimensions for installation and maintenance
- External CO2 connection — gas supply system typically located outside building
- Skid-mounted construction — common base simplifies installation
